This article argues that photography is a medium of communication where three levels of language are employed. They are: the language of technique, the language of design and the language of expressive composition. The paper argues there is a relationship between the use of these languages and the visual cultures of the documentary, the pictorial image and the conceptual photograph.
The basic principles and processes to be followed in developing a portfolio of creative images is described with particular emphasis upon the rationale and process to be followed in ensuring an individual can grow in their photographic practice.
